Form I-9 CNMI, Employment Eligibility Verification


The purpose of Form I-9 CNMI is to verify the identity and employment authorization for each new employee (both citizen and noncitizen) hired in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) after November 27, 2009. All employees (citizens and noncitizens) hired in the CNMI after Novermber 27, 2009, and working in the CNMI after November 27, 2009 must complete Form I-9 CNMI. Form I-9 is only for use in the CNMI.

Section I of Form I-9 CNMI must be filled out by the employee no later than the time of hire. Employees may at their option provide their Social Security Number, however, those employees hired by employers participating in the Electronic Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify) who must provide their Social Security Number on Section 1 of Form I-9 CNMI.

From November 28, 2009, through November 27, 2011, a CNMI employee with a valid foreign passport and unexpired work authorization document granted under CNMI law should check “alien authorized to work” in Section 1 and enter the 6-digit Legal Immigration Information Database System (LIIDS) number in the space provided on Form I-9 CNMI.

A Preparer/Translator Certification must be completed and signed if Form I-9 CNMI is prepared by a person other than the employee (this is allowed only when the employee is unable to complete Form I-9 CNMI) on his own. However, the employee must sign Section 1 of Form I-9 CNMI on his own.
