Reentry Permit Overview
Green Card holders must always travel abroad
with their original passport and U.S. Green Card. However, Green Card holders
who spend longer periods of time abroad may loose their permanent resident
status unless they apply for a Reentry Permit. The Reentry Permit must be filed
while the Green Card holder is in the United States, but the traveler may leave the
country while it is being processed. However, it is recommend to apply for a
Reentry Permit early and make sure it is approved before leaving the country.
Traveling with a Passport
U.S. citizens must possess a valid U.S. passport in
order to travel to a foreign country while visa holders must have their own
native passport like Green Card holders. U.S. citizens wanting to visit Canada
and Mexico by foot may now also apply for the new
Passport Card. It is strongly recommend to make sure that the passport does
not expire while being a foreign country. Many countries require a visa to be
obtained in advance and the passport to be valid for at least 6 months upon
entry.
From Green Card to U.S. Citizenship
Green Card holders that intend to apply for U.S.
citizenship must be aware of that the time spent abroad does not count
towards the naturalization residency requirement. However, an Application to
Preserve Residence for Naturalization Purposes may be filed. For more
information about how to apply for a Reentry Permit and the Application to
Preserve Residence for Naturalization Purposes it is recommend to download the
"Reentry Permit for Green Card Holders Application Guide".
